In its most basic form, a washer is a component used to distribute the load of a threaded bolt. There are a number of washers used in the aerospace industry, one of which includes lock washers. Designed to securely fasten nuts and bolts in place, in addition to distributing a load, lock washers are metallic fasteners that come in a variety of materials like stainless steel, aluminum, bronze, and phosphor bronze. Used among many assemblies, they are available in many subtypes, such as split washers and star washers, and they effectively prevent nuts and bolts from turning, slipping, or coming loose due to vibration. As typical nuts have the potential to loosen as a result of vibration, lock washers are designed as another layer of protection, preventing vibration and torque from knocking a bolt out of place due to its physical properties.

Aircraft are designed with a wide range of devices, units, and systems that allow them to traverse the skies with ease. For instance, a majority of planes are equipped with aircraft rain protection/rain-removal systems that grant pilots a clear view of the airport when taxiing, in addition to a better view of the approach path, departure path, and runway environment when taking off and landing in rainy weather. That being said, these systems are not commonly used during flight at high altitude.

In the early days of aviation, pilots navigated the skies by looking out the window and locating visual landmarks, or by celestial navigation which consisted of finding one’s way by observing the sun, moon, and stars. For example, in the 1920s, US airmail carriers used strategically placed bonfires as their aids, and during the day, they would use oversized concrete arrows that were placed on the ground for guidance.
